5 weeks left for the big half marathon race!

This past weekend I had a wonderful time with my family celebrating the Easter holiday. Two words: We feasted!
Saturday morning I was able to get a 14 mile run in. I ran from my home down the big hills to the Canal Way bike path for an out and back run. I normally drive the 2 miles down the hills to the parking lot of Canal Way but I wanted to use running back up the hills as a good physical and mental preparation training for the coming fall Columbus marathon and even more the "heart break hills" of the Boston marathon in April 2007. You see mental prep starts the day you sign up for a big race. Now I just have to learn nutrition on a long training run and what foods and when to eat during a marathon. When I did my last marathon 11 years ago nutrition wasn't a science as it is today. Even when I did 20 mile long training runs I wouldn't eat or drink water because the thought wasn't there for me. I am hoping to learn a thing or two about nutrition this year to help with my survival of running a marathon.
Sunday was a 33 mile bike ride. I felt great and glad to be out riding on a beautiful day. I think my strength and speed is where I was at the end of the fall season. This could only mean if all goes well I should be stronger on the bike this summer.
This week will include Tuesday track workout and Thursday 30 minute tempo run and a 10 mile race on Saturday. My son and grandson will race in the kids run before I run the 10 miler. They are excited just as much as I am about the race.

Well it sounds as though you were able to work off much of that feasting!

Saturday should be fun for your whole family. I am looking forward to watching all the kids run on Saturday before embarking on my 10 miles as well!

No water on a 20 mile run? I can only imagine how much weight you lost on training runs like that...

Good luck with that 10 miler on Saturday!

Nice, plus a hill workout too...great job!

Totally know what you mean by 'feasting', I'm still working on making up for mine.

11 years ago your last marathon? I imagine after that you've only participated in triathlons, how nice!

You didn't even drink water, how could you do 20 miles?

How fun is to have your 2 boys running there with you! You'll have a great time.
You're right about 'the science' of things now. When I first got into running and fitness about 20 years ago, it was a 'just get out there and make it happen' kind of sport. Times have sure changed, huh? Make it fun!

You are very wise to practice your fueling while training. Try different solids and liquids in different amounts and different intervals all the time. Eventually you will discover what is working best for you. On a warm intense day, I will ingest about 4 cups of Accelerade per hour (70 cal per cup) plus some plain water based on perceived thirst. Any more energy drink than that begins to cause me cramps. This works for me for hours and is easier than solids.

Have fun at the Hermes 10 miler! I am going to be out of town, or I would be running it too..

I took 4 gels at Boston (150 cals each, Tropical Blast E-Gels) miles 6,12,18, and 23 or 24 (can't remember!)

I tried to avoid drinking too much and I think I ended up a bit dehydrated. I did gatorade every 2 miles and water at all the gel stops.

You are going to rock in Columbus!
